Can You Pressure Wash Teak Furniture? Here's the Real Answer

Why People Reach for a Pressure Washer
It's fast, it feels thorough, and for genuinely dirty outdoor furniture, it seems like the obvious tool. And to be fair, used correctly, it can help lift dirt and grime effectively. The problem is in the details.
Where It Goes Wrong
Teak is a dense hardwood, but it's not immune to physical damage from water pressure. Using too high a pressure setting, or holding the nozzle too close to the surface, can:
Gouge and roughen the wood's surface texture
Create an uneven, "fuzzy" grain that actually holds onto dirt and moisture more easily afterward
Strip away more of the wood's healthy surface than intended, rather than just the dirt and oxidized layer sitting on top
Once this happens, the furniture typically needs sanding to smooth the surface back out — meaning the shortcut ends up creating extra work rather than saving time.
If You're Going to Use One
If you do want to pressure wash, keep these guidelines in mind:
Use a wide-angle nozzle, generally around 25 (green) - 40 (white) degrees, never a narrow, concentrated jet
Keep the nozzle at least 12 inches away from the surface at all times
Use a lower pressure setting than you'd use on concrete or siding
Keep the nozzle moving constantly, rather than holding it in one spot
If the Damage Is Already Done
If your furniture already has a rough, bumpy texture from previous pressure washing, don't worry — this is fixable. It just means the surface needs to be sanded smooth again before any cleaning or sealing will look right. It's a more involved fix than it would have been otherwise, but teak's durability means it can generally handle the correction without issue.
